Oh man, I love how ugly that label looks, all cropped and destroyed. Or maybe I’m making excuses for my own laziness. I don’t particularly care.

So, I drank this beer last Spring. Almost a year ago. Thought I should start reviewing beers and wrote down some notes. Slow and steady, man. Slow… I’ll leave it at that.

Golden wheat color, a decent head with medium sized bubblies. That sweet, spicy Belgian yeast aroma, along with malt and some muted hops. Bubbly and effervescent, yet the mouthfeel was almost oily (maybe unmalted wheat in the grist?). The first flavor to come at you swinging (Port Beers tend to unveil themselves quickly) is an acidic sour flavor. A hint of coriander, and what I can only describe as a spicy yeast flavor dominates. As it warms, a bit of honey on the nose and palate.

My favorite Lost Abbey beers are the sours and the crazy weird dark ales. Red Barn is almost a little too full-bodied to my taste, for the style, but I like it on the occasion when I want a big fucker of a saison.

And Lost Abbey says my coriander call is off:

Lightly spiced with Organic Ginger, Orange Peels, Black Pepper and Grains of Paradise

Now I want another bottle.
